Dungeons & Dragons highly anticipated virtual tabletop, Sigil, went live on Thursday according to a blog post. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the fully three-dimensional system includes integrations with character sheets created in D&D Beyond, a tool for building and customizing miniatures, animated spell effects, and more. Fans can try the tool out and join multiplayer games for free, but running a multiplayer game will require a Master Tier subscription, which is currently listed as $4.58 per month.
According to the D&D Beyond website, this isn’t a beta but the full release of the toolset. We’ve demoed the software a handful of times in the several years its been in development, and it feels very capable. But don’t expect an experience like Baldur’s Gate 3, necessarily. Instead, it’s more of a recreation of the tabletop experience, with static miniatures, terrain, and buildings — albeit augmented with some very powerful bells and whistles.
Most important for harried Dungeon Masters and their players, the system integrates with D&D Beyond, which means you can bring over your existing characters, monsters, and even some elements of your ongoing adventures to prime the pump. But it’s a lot more sophisticated than that. The blog post calls out the following elements:
- “Craft breathtaking 3D digital environments using a selection of assets, brushes, and lighting effects.”
- Place “notes, markers, tokens, and digital miniatures on the map.”
- Upload “2D maps, handouts, and reference images.”
- Utilize “animated spell effects” and digital dice rolling.
- Tools for “fog of war” to “control what players see, while ping, highlight, and measurement tools support tactical decision-making.”
- Offer a “built-in journal for storing adventure notes and a chat system that keeps players connected.”
- A digital miniature builder “complete with armor, weapons, and poses.”
- And “seamless” integration with D&D Beyond, allowing for synchronization of “character sheets, stat blocks, and digital dice.”
D&D also offers another virtual tabletop called simply Maps which is currently in beta.
