A woman has left social media users baffled after showcasing her day getting drunk at a police station—which she did for a good cause.
TikTok user @a_jarrott recently posted a video of herself and several friends at the Lubbock Police Department in Texas, where they had volunteered to “get drunk” for the officers.
The video showed the women, wearing high-vis vests, undertaking Breathalyzer tests, sitting in police cars, signing paperwork and—crucially—drinking vodka measured out by a uniformed officer.
In a statement to Newsweek, a spokesperson for the police department said the video showcased a portion of a Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) class, which the department teaches to recruits in its academy.
“This three-day course covers how to administer field sobriety tests, recognize signs of intoxication, and understand the effects of alcohol impairment,” the spokesperson said.
They continued: “On the second and third days, we conduct alcohol workshops, as seen in the video. During these workshops, volunteers consume alcohol under controlled conditions, allowing recruits to practice administering field sobriety tests.
“At the end of each workshop, volunteers introduce themselves, and the recruits who tested them share whether they believe the volunteer was intoxicated. We then reveal the volunteers’ final blood alcohol content (BAC) levels.”
Alcohol amounts are determined based on body weight, with a target BAC of 0.12 to 0.14.
same time next week?? @Hannah @kspeaks42 @Hanna @Paityncgreen @Ethan Etheredge
In the TikTok video, the women can be seen undergoing field sobriety tests, including following an officer’s finger with their eyes. They also appeared to have fun—dancing, laughing and even doing the worm on the floor of the police station.
At the end of the video, the women received certificates from the Lubbock Police Academy. The poster wrote in the caption, “Same time next week?”
Newsweek has contacted @a_jarrott for comment via TikTok.
The video has gone viral, amassing more than 20 million views and 13,000 comments, with one user writing: “I did this one time. I didn’t volunteer, but I think both sides learned a lot.”
A commenter asked whether the high-vis vests were so the police officers “don’t lose you,” while another said, “I would need them to sign something stating that any criminal offenses that occur there while drunk will be waived.”
“Wait, they give you a certificate at the end?” I love this,” a user wrote, as another added, “This looks so fun, I think I’ll have my birthday here.”
An LPD spokesperson said the workshops offered “invaluable training” for recruits, as it allowed them to “observe firsthand how alcohol affects mental and physical faculties. They also refine their skills in administering SFSTs under the guidance of experienced officers and instructors.”
“While other agencies have conducted similar workshops, we cannot say how common the practice remains today,” the spokesperson said. “Our department has used this training method for the past 18 years.”
All volunteers are aged 21 and over, sign waivers beforehand, and are transported to and from the workshop by an officer to ensure they do not drive.
The volunteers are also monitored throughout the course with regular blood pressure, pulse and blood-alcohol checks to prevent “extreme intoxication,” and they are allowed to refuse alcohol or withdraw from the workshop at any time.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, at a BAC of .08 grams of alcohol per deciliter of blood, “crash risk increases exponentially.” It is illegal across the United States to drive with a BAC of .08 or higher. In Utah, the limit is .05.
