When software engineer Josh Wardle first created Wordle during the COVID-19 pandemic, he merely wanted a game for “me and my partner to enjoy,” he told Newsweek in 2022.

Since then, the puzzle has been acquired by The New York Times and has skyrocketed in popularity, even boasting a celebrity following that includes Meghan Markle, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

The game challenges users to guess the daily five-letter word within six tries through a process of elimination. Green tiles indicate the letter is correct and in the right place; yellow tiles indicate the letter is in the word, though not in the correct spot; and gray tiles indicate the letter is not in the word whatsoever.

Luckily, the brainteaser isn’t timed, so you are free to mull over what the answer could be for as long as you would like.

In an interview with Newsweek in 2022, Joel C. Wallenberg—a senior lecturer in language change at the University of York, England—spoke out on Wordle‘s appeal.

“Language always seems to be fascinating to people. This is perhaps because producing and understanding language is a fantastically complex process, and we are only aware of the tiniest bit of that process while it’s going on; most of what we do when we speak, we do unconsciously,” Wallenberg said.

“But it may be that people have an inkling that they’re doing something very involved and impressive when they speak, even if they don’t know the details or why it should be that way.”

Keep scrolling for Newsweek‘s top tips and answer for puzzle #1,349.

The answer to today’s Wordle is “lodge.”

As a verb, Merriam-Webster defines the term as “to provide temporary quarters for,” “to serve as a receptacle for,” “to beat (a crop) flat to the ground,” “to deposit for safeguard or preservation,” “to lay (something, such as a complaint) before a proper authority” and more.

As a noun, it means, “A house set apart for residence in a particular season (such as the hunting season),” “a house on an estate originally for the use of a gamekeeper, caretaker, or porter,” “a den or lair especially of gregarious animals (such as beavers)” and others.

Bravo if you got today’s Wordle correct! But don’t fret if you didn’t. Wordle is released at midnight in your local time zone, which means you will get another chance to play on Friday.

In the meantime, why not give these other popular word-based games a go?
