The penultimate week of the inaugural TGL regular season is in the books and the final TV ratings are in.
Monday’s doubleheader on ESPN2 drew the lowest ratings of this TGL season, netting 263,000 viewers for the first match and 297,000 viewers for the late match, per Josh Carpenter of Sports Business Journal.
Those numbers were still an improvement from last year at the same time for ESPN, when a studio show and a women’s basketball game drew less than half that amount of viewers.
Los Angeles Golf Club and New York Golf Club squared off in the first match of the night with LAGC coming out on top 5-4 to clinch a playoff berth.
In the nightcap, Rory McIlroy and Boston Common Golf continued to struggle, losing 6-3 to Atlanta Drive GC to fall to 0-3-1 on the season.
Following this loss, a lot needs to go right for Boston Common Golf in order for McIlroy and company to make the playoffs.
First, they must win next Tuesday’s tilt against New York by at least four holes. At the same time, Tiger Woods‘ Jupiter Links GC must lose to Atlanta Drive GC in order for Boston to qualify.
Monday’s TGL ratings are somewhat alarming for a league that seemed to be building some momentum throughout its first season. However, there is still reason for optimism with a loaded final slate of the regular season on the horizon.
The real test for the league will come on March 17 and 18 when the playoffs get underway with the semifinal matches.
Los Angeles, Atlanta and The Bay Golf Club have already clinched a spot in the postseason, but there is still plenty on the line during the final week.
