Drew Barrymore‘s daughters are her No. 1 fans. On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress revealed their reactions to seeing her in Scream for the first time.
Barrymore was chatting with co-hosts Valerie Bertinelli and Ross Mathews, who asked if her daughters Olive, 12, and Frankie, 10, have seen any of her movies.
“They definitely watch the films that I’m in,” she said. “They call them mom movies. But never once have I said, ‘I’d like you to watch this.’ I let them discover them on their own.”
For instance, Barrymore said her kids recently watched Scream at a sleepover. In the 1996 slasher, Barrymore’s character is slaughtered by a masked killer in the first 10 to 15 minutes of the film.
“They came home the other day and said they watched Scream. They were like, ‘Mom, you got it so good in that movie,’” Barrymore said. “They were with girlfriends and they were at a sleepover and they were watching Scream. It’s just so fun that they’re old enough now.”
Barrymore explained the thought process behind having her character killed early on, telling her daughters, “I was thinking if someone that you think might be safe dies in the beginning, that that could really set us on a great trajectory for the film that all bets are off, nobody’s safe.”
According to Barrymore, Olive was so inspired by the movie that she wants to dress up as her mom and her onscreen boyfriend Steve (Kevin Patrick Walls) for Halloween when she’s older.
“I think Olive said, ‘When I get a boyfriend in high school, that’s gonna be our Halloween costume. He’ll be Steve and I’ll be you,’” she said. “My kids are old enough now to say things like that to me and I’m like, ‘OK, cool!’”
