Bofill Taller de Arquitectura has unveiled a new project in Dhërmi, an Albanian city along the Ionian Sea. Fittingly named “The Red Sol Resort,” the maze-like design evokes a contemporary castle nestled into the jagged terrain of the Ionian shore.

The Spanish firm’s site-specific design follows the undulating landscapes of the surrounding environment, resulting in volumes arising at various levels — much like other ancient Mediterranean villages dotted along the coast. The floor plan was designed as a series of squares at differing heights to facilitate dynamic spatial experiences for the hotel pavilions, apartments, and villas, while the stairs, bridges, and walkways create a fortress-like atmosphere. Stairs leading to different levels are orientated in alternating directions, giving the site a maze-like sensibility reminiscent of MC Escher’s surreal artworks.

Throughout the building, Bofill Taller de Arquitectura built secluded terraces, outdoor pools, and lush gardens giving visitors a diverse array of private enclaves to enjoy. Scenic vantage points frame the blue sky and sea, as well as the surrounding greenery, with the bold contrast of the saturated red exteriors.

The minimalistic approach to the design evokes the serene 3D architecture of digital artists like Joe Mortell and Six N. Five. These digital designs have gained popularity in the “metaverse” era as people find intrigue and comfort in surreal virtual spatial design. These visually pleasing images and animations often include modern furniture, retro tiling, ultra-smooth materials, and serene landscapes. As digital design continues to advance at an accelerated pace, perhaps more physical spaces will emerge with these prominent digitally-informed designs.
