Sunny Hostin sent a strong message to conservatives who are critical of “woke” on this morning’s episode of The View, claiming anyone who doesn’t care about the true meaning behind the word is “ungodly.”

Hostin’s commentary came amid a Hot Topics chat about Jane Fonda‘s acceptance speech for the Life Achievement Award at Sunday night’s (Feb. 23) SAG Awards. In the politically-charged speech, Fonda defended the word “woke,” noting that it “just means you give a damn about other people” — which Hostin fully agreed with.

“I have thought about a conversation you and I have had so many times — about the co-opting of the word ‘woke,’” Hostin said to moderator Whoopi Goldberg. “And the fact that the right, somehow, has made it a dirty word.”

Hostin went on to explain the true meaning of the word, telling the audience, “To be woke is a word that came out of the African American community and it is about acknowledging social justice inequities, acknowledging peoples’ suffering. It is not a bad thing to care about other people, to care about the suffering of others, and to act upon it.”

With Goldberg often saying she’s “never been asleep,” Hostin said she felt the same way.

“My parents grew up in the civil rights movement. I grew up in the late ’60s, ’70s. I was always a part of it. So I’ve never been asleep,” she said, noting that it “angers” her when people say they want to get rid of “this woke stuff.”

“That’s telling me that you don’t care about my lived experience. You don’t care about the oppression of the LGBTQ community. You don’t care about the oppression of the disabled. You don’t care about the oppression of immigrants. You don’t care about your fellow neighbor,” she continued, before adding, “And that is ungodly. That is not Christian.”

Ana Navarro then chimed in with her own two cents.

“You know what the most ironic thing is? They don’t care about it,” she said. “And they don’t care about it while wearing big fat crosses around their necks.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
