Karla Sofía Gascón will be at the Oscars after all, with Netflix covering her expenses to attend the Dolby Theatre ceremony in Los Angeles on March 2nd, sources have confirmed to Deadline.

All Oscar nominees are afforded a ticket to the ceremony, so there was little reason to doubt that the Emilia Pérez star would show, to commemorate a historic nomination. The prospect had only been cast into some doubt when Gascón became embroiled in controversy in recent weeks, over resurfaced tweets from 2020 and 2021, which included offensive remarks about everything from Muslim to George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.

With her Oscar nomination for her starring role in Jacques Audiard’s musical, Gascón became the first openly trans actor nominated for Best Actress. But in the wake of her social media scandal, backlash was swift, leading to Netflix scrubbing Gascón from her film’s promotional campaign and stepping back from paying for the actress’s awards season appearances.

The film’s creative team also distanced itself from the actress, with Audiard speaking exclusively to Deadline about behavior on Gascón’s part following the revelation of her tweets that he deemed “self-destructive.” Less than two weeks later, Audiard seemed to have softened in terms of his position toward the actress, as he included her in his thank yous following a win at the BAFTAs.

Following public outcry, Gascón issued an apology for her tweets, stating, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

The actress has stepped back from awards show appearances in the weeks since the resurfacing of her comments, including at key stops like the Critics Choice Awards, BAFTA Film Awards, and SAG Awards, where she was nominated.

Details as to Gascón’s Oscars appearance — including seating arrangements and whether she’ll take interviews on the red carpet — are still being sorted, we’re told. Reps for Netflix and Gascón didn’t immediately return request for comment. The New York Post first was first to the scoop on the Oscars development.
