Demi Moore’s Golden Globe win in January may have been her first major acting award, but her triumph at Sunday night’s SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Lead Role proves that Moore has a lot more accolades on the horizon.
“The Golden Globes was such a shock,” said Moore in a virtual backstage after the ceremony. “There’s been beauty and joy in each moment.”
Moore won for her role in Mubi’s The Substance as Elizabeth, a fading celebrity who takes a black-market drug that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself. Although horror films often are overlooked at trophy shows, Moore added backstage that “you know when there’s truth and humanity in a performance. It’s what we connect to, regardless of what the genre is.”

“This is extraordinary and so deeply meaningful,” Moore said as she accepted her award. “I was thinking about this night, and I realized I hadn’t thought back to when I got my membership to this incredible organization. … It gave me purpose. It gave me direction. I was a kid who had no blueprint for life.”
In addition to what acting has meant for her, Moore had a bit of advice for anyone pursuing the craft now. “As the actors who are having to do it all, I just encourage you, don’t lose sight of the human connection. That’s the work that we do. It’s to be connected to one another.”
Also nominated in the same category with Moore were Pamela Anderson for The Last Showgirl, Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Karla Sofía Gascón for Emilia Pérez and Mikey Madison for Anora.
