The long-awaited sequel to the cult classic Constantine is officially moving forward, with the project now in the works, as confirmed by star Keanu Reeves.

In a recent interview with Inverse, the John Wick and The Matrix star revealed that after years of trying to bring a follow-up to life, the creative team is making progress.

According to Reeves, a story has finally been put together and pitched to DC Studios, which gave the green light. “We’ve [along with director Francis Lawrence] been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘OK.’ So, we’re going to try and write a script,” he explained.

While Reeves kept details under wraps, he did confirm that Constantine 2 would take place in the “same world” as the 2005 original.

“We’re not going off that,” he added. “John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more.”

This exciting news follows comments from director Francis Lawrence last week, where he expressed that the duo are “closer than ever to being able to do a sequel.” He added that they “have a great idea,” noting that they have sifted through numerous comics over the years for inspiration.

“We’ve had the character in the back of our minds for 20 years, just kind of percolating on ideas, and stories and characters we love, and ideas we love,” Lawrence shared.

Constantine is loosely based on the Hellblazer comic series from DC Comics/Vertigo Comics, which was initially met with resistance from dedicated fans but has since gained its own iconic status.

The film, starring Reeves and Rachel Weisz, follows John Constantine, a troubled exorcist with the unique ability to travel to hell and witness the true forms of angels and demons.
