Detroit is coming off a 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the team’s last game. After going down 2-0 in the first three minutes of the match, Vladimir Tarasenko got Detroit on the board just before the 10-minute mark. But Tampa scored two more right after to go up 4-1.
Patrick Kane scored near the end of the first period to make it 4-2, and then Detroit got within a goal after a second-period goal from Alex DeBrincat. That was as close as the Red Wings managed to get.
Minnesota beat the New York Islanders 6-3 last time out. Marco Rossi struck first, but then the Islanders scored three in a row. Minnesota was able to dig out of a 3-1 hole though, scoring the final five goals of the match.
This is the first of two meetings this season between these teams. They next play on Feb. 25 in Minnesota.
