The Toronto Blue Jays have whiffed big on superstar free agents recently. They failed to seal the deal on Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani. With Guerrero set to hit free agency next season, after the Blue Jays failed to extend him, the team could look to trade him before he potentially walks and the Blue Jays get nothing in return.
Since Guerrero has just one season of control, he may not return a massive prospect haul, but he is still worthy of a blockbuster trade package. The Blue Jays may not need a package to facilitate a rebuild since they still have Anthony Santander and Andrés Giménez for the future.
FanSided’s Matthew Sookram proposed this trade that sends Guerrero to the Atlanta Braves for a young star and more:
- Blue Jays receive: outfielder Micahel Harris II, left-handed pitcher Dylan Dodd (Braves No. 25) and right-handed pitcher Luke Waddell
- Braves receive: first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
“This trade is a mixed bag because Harris isn’t the type of player you acquire if you’re planning on a rebuild,” wrote Sookram. “The 24-year-old former Rookie of the Year winner saw a slight dip in his production last season and with Profar, Jared Kelenic and eventually, a healthy Ronald Acuña Jr. all on the roster, Harris could be the odd man out, making him available at the deadline.”
Harris slashed .264/.304/.418 in 110 games last season. He will go into the season as a starter, but if the opportunity to add a player like Guerrero presents itself, the Braves should have no problem parting with Harris and letting Kelenic take his spot as an everyday player.
The Blue Jays would not have to worry about Harris leaving them in free agency until at least 2033. He signed an eight-year, $82 million deal in 2023 and has club options for 2031 and 2032.
