One of Porsche’s most legendary cars, the 1988 Porsche 959 Sport, is set to cross the auction block via RM Sotheby’s. As one of only 29 Sport-spec models ever built, this specific example finished in Grand Prix White over Grey cloth upholstery presents a rare opportunity for collectors. With just 3,757 miles on the odometer, it remains in excellent condition.

The Porsche 959 was a technological marvel of its era, showcasing advanced features like adjustable suspension, an intelligent all-wheel-drive system and lightweight magnesium wheels. While the standard 959 Komfort was a sophisticated road-going supercar, the Sport version took things a step further. It shed 220 pounds by ditching adaptive suspension, air conditioning and the stereo, while adding a full roll cage and four-point harnesses. The result was a sharper, more track-focused vehicle.

This particular 959 Sport was originally purchased in 1989 by Werner Funk, a former Porsche factory racing team crew chief. Unable to import the car to the U.S. due to DOT restrictions, Funk enjoyed it briefly in Europe. Afterward, the car spent most of its life in Switzerland and Italy, receiving meticulous maintenance before making its way to the U.S.

The rare 959 Sport is now set to be auctioned on February 28 as part of RM Sotheby’s upcoming Miami Sale and is estimated to fetch as much as $6,500,000 USD.
