Chase Briscoe, who started from pole position for the Daytona 500, and the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing team have been hit with substantial penalties following a breach identified after the season-opening race.
Post-race inspections by NASCAR of Briscoe’s car uncovered modifications to the spoiler in defiance of NASCAR’s strict regulations.
During a routine inspection after the Daytona 500, NASCAR selected Briscoe’s car for thorough scrutiny at their Research & Development center. This revealed crucial violations involving changes to the car’s spoiler, a regulated part that must remain unmodified according to NASCAR standards.
The alterations made contradicted two specific sections of the NASCAR Rule Book—Section 14.1, which covers overall vehicle assembly, and Section 14.5.8 related to spoiler specifications. The discovery led to severe penalties for Briscoe in the driver standings and for the team.

NASCAR stated:
“JGR was found to be in violation of Section 14.1 of the Rule Book, which pertains to overall assembled vehicles rules, and 14.5.8, which deals with the spoiler.
“Specifically, the spoiler base was found to be modified on the No. 19 car. The spoiler base is a single-source part and cannot be modified.”
Joe Gibbs Racing faces serious consequences such as a 100-point deduction for Briscoe along with a 10-playoff point loss, dropping his position dramatically from 10th to 39th.
The team also incurs a $100,000 fine, and crew chief James Small is handed a four-race suspension.

Joe Gibbs Racing has confirmed that it will appeal the penalty. However, it is yet to be seen if this appeal will be successful. The team also stated:
“The issue in question was caused in the assembly process when bolts used to attach the spoiler base to the deck lid caused the pre-drilled holes to wear due to supplied part interferences.”
