It has been nearly four years since Wordle was launched, but the daily brainteasers are still keeping puzzle enthusiasts guessing.
Wordle was released to the public in October 2021 and was acquired by The New York Times in January 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure sum. Today, it is the newspaper’s most-popular game and boasts a large global following, including celebrities such as Ben Affleck, Meghan Markle, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and more.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in April 2023, Burnett said that she and Janney “Wordle.” “We just Wordle back and forth,” the Carol Burnett Show star, 91, said. “She’s the first one every morning at my coffee.”
Josh Wardle, a software engineer who created the Wordle—which is a play on his name—initially came up with the idea as a way to keep himself and his partner entertained during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“When I designed the game, it was for me and my partner to enjoy, so I made sure that all of the entries were randomized,” Wardle told Newsweek in 2022. “In other words, I don’t actually know what tomorrow’s word is going to be, which means that I can take part like everybody else.”
Wardle added that, while he is “reluctant to tell anybody how they should play,” he offered up this piece of advice to Newsweek readers: “One thing I will say is that a lot of people tend to think that the game is just about finding those green and gold letters. If you get those, then you theoretically have the information you need, but you don’t want to get too hung up on that.”
To begin the game, players must guess with the daily five-letter word within six tries before the answer will be shown on your screen. Color-coded clues are given as you play: Green tiles indicate the letter is correct and in the right spot; yellow tiles indicate the letter is in the word, though in the incorrect place; and gray tiles indicate the letter is not in the word at all.
