A woman found a lamp on Facebook Marketplace and decided to “resurrect” it after she thought a “crime had been committed.”
TikTok user Alex Preston found the lamp, showing how it had been painted by the previous owner, something she couldn’t believe. The lamp was originally made to resemble a flower, with glass petals surrounding the lightbulbs.
However, they had been painted over in different colors, leading Preston to go on a mission to “resurrect” it. She told Newsweek: “The original lotus lamp is always something that I’ve wanted to find and I’ve seen it on Facebook Marketplace but for like $200+.
“I’ve also seen people find them at thrift stores and I was always hoping one day I would find one for cheap. I was scrolling though Marketplace like I do most days and the shape jumped out at me right away since it is so distinctive.
“I was conflicted so I posted a video about it and it blew up I was not expecting that. So I reached out, drove 40 mins to get it and brought it home.”
In the video, we see Preston take home the lamp and begin to carefully remove the paint. She also flipped the flower features on the lamp to stand upright rather than facing down, and the results were praised by viewers.
“The process was tedious but worth it,” she said. “Just a lot of scrubbing. The wiring I had no clue where to start but my dad is very handy and I brought it to him to fix but it still wouldn’t work. People suggested chargeable lights so that was plan B.
“I’ve very happy with the results! It’s one of the first things you see when you walk into my house. It was a lot of work but looking back, it only took three days and for $35 and supplies it was so worth it.”
Facebook Marketplace has become a popular way for users of the social media app to buy and sell goods to each other since it was first launched in 2016.
According to Statista, more than 1 billion people visit Facebook Marketplace every month.
People shared their reactions to the lamp’s transformation in the comments section of the video.
Ava Bianco wrote: “Every time I see a lotus lamp on my FYP [For You Page] I think no one deserves it as much as I do but man did you WORK for your lamp!”
Topher commented: “Are these desirable now? My stepmother had one (I assume my dad still has it), and I always thought it was tacky as hell.”
“Am I the only one who liked the painted version too?” said Wes.
Maguie said of the lamp’s transformation: “An angel got back its wings.”
