Triston Casas’ atypical candor finally backfired.
On Tuesday, the star first baseman put on his general manager hat while offering blunt roster advice for the Boston Red Sox. He said that Rafael Devers should play third base, Alex Bregman should play second base, and the franchise’s top prospects all should start the season in the minor leagues.
There’s a decent chance Boston’s top decision-makers, including manager Alex Cora, disagree with Casas on all three points.
Casas’ remarks predictably prompted harsh criticism from Boston radio personality Tony Massarotti, who ripped into the 25-year-old during Tuesday’s episode of the “Felger & Mazz” show.
“Shut your piehole,” Massarotti said. “Shut your piehole. This guy knows everything. I’ve been saying it for a couple of years: He knows everything. He’s got the answers to everything. He knows it all. … Oh my gosh, does he have all the answers? … In fact, can we do ‘Toolbag of the Day’ now? … This was an easy one. … What a freaking tool.
” … This guy’s an A-hole. He’s an A-hole. … Seriously, this kid has his head up his ass. Unbelievable.”
Even if Casas walks back his comments later this week, the damage already has been done. Many Red Sox fans already were on the fence with Casas due to his mercurial personality; now, they might welcome a return of the offseason trade rumors.
Still, Casas has the potential to be one of the best first baseman in baseball and a foundational piece for the Red Sox as they enter a new era. But it’s fair to wonder whether he eventually will talk his way out of Boston.
