The latest live-action Lion King movie, Mufasa: The Lion King, is coming to digital platforms for purchase or rental tomorrow. But you’re going to have to pay a pretty penny if you want to watch this new Disney film at home.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins, tells the story of a young orphaned lion, Mufasa (voiced by Rebel Ridge star Aaron Pierre), who is adopted into the family of a young lion prince, named Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). Someday, Taka will be known as the villainous Scar. But before all the bad blood, Mufasa and Taka were brothers.

This is a prequel to the 2019 Lion King remake, and a number of voice actors from the first film will be reprising their roles, including Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, John Kani, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. New additions to the voice cast include Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, and Blue Ivy Carter, in her first feature film role.

It seems audiences do want more Lion King movies, because the Mufasa movie made over $672 million at the worldwide box office. And the movie’s not done making money yet. Disney is releasing Mufasa: The Lion King on “premium” video-on-demand tomorrow, meaning you can shell out $30 to buy a digital copy of the film. That… or you could wait for Mufasa to stream on Disney+. Here’s what we know.

Where to watch the Mufasa movie on streaming:

Beginning on Tuesday, February 18, Mufasa: The Lion King will be available to buy digitally on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Fandango At Home, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie costs $29.99 to buy, and $24.99 to rent.

Mufasa: The Lion King will also be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, April 1. The digital and DVD release will come with a Sing-Along version of the film, deleted scenes, featurettes and more. (Bonus features may vary, depending on which service you use to purchase the film.)

Mufasa: The Lion King is not yet streaming on any subscription streaming services, but we do expect to see Mufasa: The Lion King streaming on Disney+ soon.

When will the Mufasa: The Lion King movie be streaming on Disney Plus?

Mufasa: The Lion King will likely stream on Disney+ in the next month or so, because it is a Disney movie. All the new Disney theatrical movies end up streaming on Disney+, often about four to six months after opening in theaters.

Another recent Disney animated movie, Inside Out 2, was released on premium video-on-demand about two months after opening in theaters, and began streaming on Disney+ about three months after opening in theaters. If Mufasa follows a similar release strategy, you may see Mufasa streaming on Disney+ around late March 2025.

That said, the Mufasa movie Disney+ release date has not yet officially been announced. This is all guesswork, so take it with a grain of salt. For now, if you want to watch Mufasa at home, you can buy a digital copy of the movie. And in the meantime, you can stream the original Lion King on Disney+.
