Adam Sandler was in rare form for the “SNL 50: The Anniversary Special.”
The comedian can normally be seen in garish polos and baggy shorts while shooting hoops during pickup basketball games — and he’s not known for his sharp red carpet style, either.
However, the “Happy Gilmore” star went black tie for the special “Saturday Night Live” red carpet on Sunday, breaking out a classic tuxedo for Sunday’s star-studded event.
“It’s a terrible feeling,” the star told Variety of the outfit. “Al Franken saw me in a sweatshirt last night and he was like, ‘What are you doing?’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t wanna let Al down.’ So I put a tux on.”
Despite his best efforts, pal Amy Schumer couldn’t help but rib Sandler a bit about his look. While doing an interview with People on the red carpet at the same time as the actor, she told him, “You look handsome. No, you look very handsome.”
She added, “Yeah, a tailor would have been … you know. Anyway.”
“That means someone’s gotta touch me and I don’t like that,” Sandler defended.
During the show, the “Uncut Gems” star, 58, paid touching tribute to his fellow former “SNL” cast members throughout the years.
After a surprise introduction from Jack Nicholson — who was clad in a Yankees beret and tinted sunglasses in the rare public appearance — Sandler launched into a touching song, appropriately titled “50 Years.”
The nostalgic lyrics touched on the show’s history as well as moments from Sandler’s run, which spanned from 1991 to 1995, including a shoutout to late friend Chris Farley.
While some may prefer a spiffied-up Sandler, he’s gotten plenty of praise for his oversized and colorful looks in the past, too. In 2021, he was the most Googled in the “celebrity outfit” category, ahead of others like Britney Spears (#2) or Harry Styles (#6).
But even his co-stars can’t stand some of his red carpet looks, with pal Jennifer Aniston roasting his “Murder Mystery 2” premiere outfit in 2023. While she looked incredible in a netted Versace minidress, Sandler showed up in a Knicks sweatshirt from Todd Snyder over a Hawaiian shirt, paired with khakis and blue sneakers.
“What the hell are you doing?!” Aniston, 54, exclaimed when she saw him at the event. “I’m not standing next to him!”
