Canada kicked off its tournament on Wednesday with a thrilling matchup against Sweden. The Swedish squad pushed Canada to the limit, forcing overtime in a tightly contested game. However, Mitch Marner delivered the game-winning goal in the extra period, securing a 4-3 victory for Canada.
The United States had no issue in its opening match on Thursday, knocking off Finland 6-1. The contest was tied after the first period, but the USA team was too much for the Finnish team from that point on.
Team USA is coached by Mike Sullivan with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews serving as captain. Alternate captains are Charlie McAvoy of the Boston Bruins and Matthew Tkachuk of the Florida Panthers. Other players on the team include Chris Kreider of the New York Rangers, Jake Sanderson of the Ottawa Senators, and Jack Hughes of the New Jersey Devils.
Canada is coached by Jon Cooper. Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the captain while alternate captains are Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche and Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers. Other players on the roster include Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins and Nathan MacKinnon of the Avalanche.
