Sophie Thatcher, known for her role in Yellowjackets, is reportedly in talks to star alongside Mark Eydelshteyn in the second season of Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
If the deal goes through, Thatcher and Eydelshteyn would take on the titular roles of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, according to Deadline. As previously reported, Billie Eilish had been considered for the female lead, but scheduling conflicts with her ongoing tour prevented that from happening.
Amazon MGM Studios, co-producing the series with New Regency, has been on the lookout for actors in their twenties to play John and Jane Smith in the upcoming season, offering one-year contracts.
Created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, the first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith follows two strangers, played by Glover and Maya Erskine, who are assigned to pose as a married couple while beginning their careers as spies. As John and Jane Smith, they embark on high-stakes missions together while catching genuine feelings towards each other.
The Season 1 finale, which Sloane described as a “nod to a ‘70s cinema cliffhanger” in an interview with Deadline, left audiences with a dramatic shootout between John and Jane, making their fate uncertain.
When asked whether Mr. & Mrs. Smith might follow an anthology-style format similar to Fargo—which Sloane previously worked on—she responded with a simple “maybe.” This has fueled speculation that Amazon’s adaptation of the 2005 Mr. & Mrs. Smith film could take a seasonal reboot approach, featuring new lead actors each year under one-year contracts.
The new John and Jane are believed to be completely different characters rather than direct replacements for Glover and Erskine’s versions in Season 1. This leaves the door open for the original leads to return in some capacity, whether their characters survived or not. Given the nature of the show, which introduces multiple Johns and Janes throughout its espionage-driven storyline, their reappearance remains a possibility.
Sloane returns as showrunner and executive producer for Season 2, with Glover also continuing as an executive producer. The series remains a joint production between New Regency and Amazon MGM Studios.
Since its February debut, Mr. & Mrs. Smith has been one of Prime Video’s biggest hits, ranking as a Top 5 new series at the time. Submitted as a drama for the 2024 Emmys, it earned 16 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and lead acting nods for Glover and Erskine.
The show ultimately took home two awards, including Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Michaela Coel. The decision to categorize the show as a drama suggests a level of continuity between seasons, similar to HBO’s The White Lotus.
Thatcher, in addition to her work on Yellowjackets, has appeared in The Book of Boba Fett and Chicago Med.
