The Couple Next Door Episode 5 “The Ultimatum” opens with Sam Heughan’s Danny having a most confusing sex dream. At first, his subconscious delights in the fantasy of his beautiful wife Becka (Jessica De Gouw) waking him up with foreplay, but soon neighbor Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) takes Becka’s place. Danny is both aroused and ashamed, imagining Becka watching his infidelity in their own bed. It’s the steamy Starz show’s pointed way of letting us know that while Danny might feel loyalty to Becka, he’s also feeling turned on by the memory of sleeping with Evie in Episode 3’s couple swap.

**Spoilers for The Couple Next Door Episode 5 “The Ultimatum,” now streaming on Starz**

It’s also The Couple Next Door’s way of letting us know exactly why Danny succumbs to Evie’s illicit seduction later in Episode 5, only to immediately regret it.

Yep, Danny and Evie have another hot and heavy hookup in The Couple Next Door Episode 5 “The Ultimatum.” The sex is initiated by an emotionally fragile Evie, who has arrived at Danny’s work after her own husband Pete (Alfred Enoch) has eviscerated her in public over the fact she’s pregnant with Danny’s baby. Evie crashes Danny’s night shift at the police station, a public place, and essentially pressures him into having sex.

Sure, Danny wants it — we know from the episode’s cold open that he does — but he also warns Evie that it’s a bad idea. Evie emphasizes the naughtiness of the situation which has Danny swiftly folding into her arms.

“I guess he’s weak, I suppose,” Sam Heughan told DECIDER about Danny’s decision to succumb to Evie.

“With Evie, yeah, I think Danny just can’t control himself in the moment. It’s hard for him,” Heughan said. “He thinks it’s one thing and obviously, you know, the spoiler is that Evie really takes it too far and lets it develop in her head.”

Evie’s seduction is pretty textbook at first. She undoes the blouse part of her dress, revealing she’s been wearing a strappy black bra under her demure outfit. Besides being pretty obvious symbolism for the femme fatale energy Evie’s been hiding under her safe, suburban exterior, it also immediate sexes up the situation. She sits on Danny’s lap, offering herself up for the taking.

When Danny finally relents, he picks her up and takes her on a desk in the police station. The sex scene is quick. Danny climaxes almost immediately, like it’s less about emotional connection and more just a physical release. Evie, however, clings to him. Her eyes are glossy with adoration.

It’s then that she breaks the news that she’s pregnant with his baby, shattering any illusions Danny might have had that both adults were on the same page about this just being a casual situation.

“He’s bought into the idea of being in an open relationship, but I think it’s Becka that’s always perhaps believed in it and understood what that concept is,” Heughan said. “Danny needs rules. He needs to know where he’s at with it.”

And now, he apparently knows where he’s at with Evie. She’s latched onto him in a deeply complicated way and he just sees their connection as “neighbors with benefits.”

There’s one more episode left of Starz’s The Couple Next Door. Episode 5 ends with Danny helping Pete break the story about the criminal corruption that’s happening in plain sight of everyone, signaling that Danny’s in a mindset where he wants to set things right. Evie, on the other hand, has left Pete and taken refuge with her family (who are totally in a cult).

We know from the show’s cold open all the way back in Episode 1 that a shot is ultimately going to go off, but who will be the victim and who will give into violence?
