The Toronto Blue Jays are trying to keep homegrown slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with the club on a long-term extension. But with each day that passes, the likelihood of that happening seems to diminish slightly. If Guerrero reaches free agency, could he land with the Philadelphia Phillies?
The four-time All-Star will be just 26 years old next winter, which will make him a popular target among interested teams if he reaches free agency. Just about any organization could use a player like Guerrero, who hit .323/.396/.544 with 30 home runs, 44 doubles, 103 RBI, and 98 runs scored in 2024.
However, CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson thinks the Phillies could be his eventual landing spot next offseason.
“They have a lot of money coming off the books this winter, including in the persons of Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto,” Anderson wrote. “The former’s exit could create some optionality with Bryce Harper, perhaps opening up first base for a new face. The Phillies always seem willing to spend money and Dave Dombrowski is no stranger to ponying up for bat-first profiles.”
FanGraphs’ Steamer projections think Guerrero will post a .906 OPS with 34 home runs, 100 RBI, and 101 runs scored in 2025 for the Blue Jays. He’ll earn $28.5 million with Toronto but is in line to get a tremendous contract on the open market. Spotrac has pegged his market value at 12 years and $427 million. But if multiple teams get into a bidding war, it could easily surpass the $500 million mark.
