President Donald Trump said he felt sorry for former Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and opined that he wasn’t mentally equipped for the job he had.
Trump made the comments Thursday after McConnell was the lone Republican vote against Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be confirmed as head of the Health and Human Services Department.
‘He’s not voting against Bobby; he’s voting against me.’
“I feel sorry for Mitch. And I was one of the people — he wanted to go to the end, and he wanted to stay leader. He wasn’t, he’s not equipped mentally,” said Trump. “He wasn’t equipped 10 years ago mentally in my opinion.”
The president’s comments were posted to social media by the White House rapid response team. Trump went on to accuse McConnell of failing the party.
“He let the Republican Party go to hell,” Trump added. “If I didn’t come along, the Republican Party wouldn’t even exist right now. Mitch McConnell never really had it. He had an ability to raise money because of his position as leader, which anybody could do. You could do it, even.”
He went on to call McConnell “bitter” and said he had convinced him to step down as leader.
McConnell released a statement explaining that he could not vote for Kennedy because McConnell had suffered from polio as a child and objected to Kennedy’s alleged crusade against vaccines.
“I’m a survivor of childhood polio. In my lifetime, I’ve watched vaccines save millions of lives from devastating diseases across America and around the world,” said McConnell. “I will not condone the re-litigation of proven cures, and neither will millions of Americans who credit their survival and quality of life to scientific miracles.”
When Trump was asked about McConnell’s past brush with polio, he said he didn’t know anything about it.
“He’s not voting against Bobby; he’s voting against me,” said Trump. “He shouldn’t have been leader. He knows that.”
Despite McConnnell’s opposition, Kennedy cruised to confirmation with a final Senate vote of 52-48.
