Episode 4 of Severance season 2 opens to a remarkably different scene than what we’re used to.
Instead of the claustrophobic, sterile confines of an office, we’re out in nature, and there’s a lone figure cast in black amongst the snow.
It’s Irvin, standing on an iced-over lake. Over the next 51 minutes, we’ll discover why exactly he’s here and not sitting at his desk like usual. If you need a far quicker recap, however, read on, because we’re explaining what happens and what it all means.
What Happens in Severance Season 2 Episode 4?
Woe’s Hollow is the most experimental episode of Severance season 2. It seems to stand unconnected to the first three episodes, and is of a much slower pace. It takes a few minutes for the MDR division to even find each other out in the wintery woodland.
“Where did you come from?” Irvin asks Helly. “I don’t know, what are we doing out here?” she replies. However they got here, it wasn’t by their own accord.
Meeting up with Mark and Dylan, the group come across a TV on a cliff. It switches on and Mr Milchick appears. He reveals the group are in Dieter Eagan national forest. Here, they must search for one of Kier’s sacred texts, which is deep within the forest.
Upon setting off, they’re guided by distant figures pointing out the way. These figures are copies of themselves, indicating this scenario may not take place in reality, but inside their mind.
A few minutes of walking later, they find a dead seal by a brook. The group is confused by it, because this is the first time they’ve seen death. “Why does it look so messed up?” asks Helly. “I don’t know. Maybe this is what dead things look like,” says Mark.
Eventually, they make it to camp. Sharing a chat around the campfire, Irvin points the finger at Helly by suggesting her innie is really her outie. Helly insults Irvin by calling him lonely. This is out of character for Helly. Could she really be Helena, the daughter of the Lumon CEO? Afterwards, Helly and Mark share a romantic moment inside one of the tents.
The next day, Irvin attacks Helly, accusing her being Helena. He charges towards her and dunks her into a cold stream, attempting to drown her. “She’s been an outie this whole time!” Irvin shouts. “She’s a mole!”
Helly screams for help from Milchick, referring to him as Seth. It seems Irvin’s fears weren’t unfounded. Milchick radios for help, and removes something called the ‘Glasgow block’. This triggers a change in Irvin’s brain, and he stops attacking Helly.
Irvin whispers an apology to Helly (or Helena), and Milchick fires him, saying he’ll never work for Lumon again. As Irvin slinks off into the forrest, things at MDR will never be the same. They’re down one member, and another, Helly, has been her outie Helena all along.
