EXCLUSIVE: Two of Brazil‘s key production houses are teaming for true crime.

Diosual Entertainment and Medialand Production have struck a strategic partnership to co-produce multiple true crime doc series. The pact will include feature films, and series aimed at pay-TV providers, free-to-air channels and pay-TV.

A second element to the deal will see Diosual’s sales arm, Diosual Distribution, shopping Medialand’s content on the national and international markets.

The true crime market is booming in Brazil, with titles such as Brazil: Elize Matsunaga, Killer Ratings and A Life Too Short: The Isabella Nardoni Case cutting through. Internationally, the genre continues to dominate schedules and play a key role for global streamers.

Led by investigative journalist and showrunner Carla Alburquerque, Medialand is one of Brazil’s key true crime producers. It created the Operação Policial and Investigação Criminal YouTube channels, which have a combined 1.79 million subscribers, and has made shows for the likes of Netflix, Prime Video, PlutoTV, Warner Bros Discovery (WBD), A+E and Brazilian free-to-air channels.

Alburquerque has worked at the likes of Viacom (now Paramount Global), Time Warner (now WBD) and TV Globo, and she runs Medialand alongside Luis Guilherme de Sá, an investigative content specialist who is the company’s Director and executive producer.

Diosual, which was formed in 2017 by CEO Guto Colunga, is behind feature films such as the Alexandre Avancini-directed Blood Mission and Succession-style drama series Whose Money Is It?, also from Avancini. Besides production, the company has theatrical, talent management and distribution divisons.

“Securing this partnership is incredibly meaningful for the Medialand Production team,” said Alberqueque. “Diosual Entertainment brings a strategic advantage and invaluable commercial market insight, allowing us to further expand the reach of our investigative documentary series, which remain at the heart of our work. Delivering quality information is our mission, and this collaboration with Guto and his team will only amplify our impact on audiences.

“We firmly believe that this union will elevate the genre, offering the public productions that combine in-depth investigative storytelling with top-tier narrative quality. Additionally, it will expand the production of true crime fiction and the development of scripts for films and series based on real cases.”

Colunga added: “This partnership represents a major strategic step for both production companies, bringing together Medialand Production’s excellence in true crime with Diosual Entertainment expertise in fiction and the wider audiovisual market. Medialand Production is the absolute reference in the genre, and our collaboration extends beyond the development and production of new true-crime documentary series in Brazil. We are also working on the creation of fictional series and films inspired by real crimes.

“Furthermore, our talent pool at Diosual Talents, consisting of award-winning screenwriters and experienced directors, will be instrumental in delivering impactful and high-quality productions. We are confident that this alliance will unlock new opportunities and further strengthen the genre, both in Brazil and internationally.”
