Yankees pitchers and catchers reported on Tuesday and The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner revealed that reliever Jake Cousins has a forearm strain that could jeopardize his availability on opening day.

FanSided’s Zachary Rotman urged the Yankees to reunite with a former Yankee in light of the news. David Robertson remains unsigned and could give the Yankees bullpen a boost.

“Even with Cousins in the mix, the Yankees seemingly had room to add one more reliever, especially if they trade Marcus Stroman, as they’ve been rumored to be wanting to do all winter,” wrote Rotman. “If Cousins opens the season on the shelf, they’ll definitely have room for another arm. Why not go all out, in that case, and sign the best reliever left? Robertson might be 39 years old, but he’s still as reliable as they come late in games.”

Robertson had a 3.00 ERA last season. In the last three seasons, he has a 2.82 ERA in 188 appearances. He has also notched 40 saves in that span. The Yankees would not need Robertson to close games as they now have Devin Williams. However, he could fill in for Cousins, who pitched great for the Yankees in close games.

He had a 2.37 ERA in 37 games and recorded one save. Robertson began his big league career with the Yankees. He spent nine seasons in the Bronx during his first stint and had a 2.81 ERA. He was named an All-Star in 2011.

He returned in 2017 and played with the Yankees in 2018 as well. As he nears the end of his career, a final season with the team he started with would make sense.
