Collin Morikawa is in Southern California this week for the Genesis Invitational. While addressing the media on Tuesday, he was asked his thoughts on Lucas Glover’s insistence the PGA Tour should ban “AimPoint” putting. Morikawa is one of the top PGA Tour stars using this technique, which is widely used in professional golf.
The two-time major champion responded to criticism with criticism, saying that if the AimPoint technique is banned, the same should be done with long putters, a controversial type of club used by many players, including Lucas Glover.
I don’t have anything against Lucas, but if we’re banning AimPoint, we should ban long putters as well,” Morikawa said. “I don’t know. I guess no one has said it, right?”
However, Morikawa did not deny that the AimPoint technique has its influence in slowing down the round of golf if not used properly.
When you get too close to the hole when someone else is putting it, I don’t want my line and putt to go over someone else’s foot and marks. But are you going to tell other players not to walk around the hole when we’re picking up putts..?”
Morikawa did later acknowledge that he does not have any problem with players using either AimPoint or a long putter. He just felt he needed to stand up for everyone that uses the same putting style that he does.
The 28-year-old pro made the comments during a press conference at Torrey Pines Golf Course, the new site for this year’s Genesis Invitational due to the Los Angeles Wildfires. Morikawa is one of the top favorites to win the title, alongside stars such as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.
Glover criticized the AimPoint technique last week during a show he hosts on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio.
Aim point statistically hasn’t helped anybody make more putts since its inception on Tour, plus, it’s also rude to be up near the hole stomping around, figuring out where the break is in yours. It needs to be banned…”
AimPoint is a green-reading technique that aims to determine the break and speed of each putt. According to My Golf Spy, there are more than 300 instructors in the United States who specialize in this technique and are certified to teach it to anyone interested in learning it, including professional players.
In addition to Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Max Homa and many other players are known to use this technique. Some of them have also been singled out by fans for the time they take to make their putts.
