G-SHOCK is back with another lineup of GM-5600 and GM-2100 watches. Building upon its formula of hardwearing functionality, the Japanese watchmaker makes yet another innovative leap into the future by launching the Tough Silicone Band. The proprietary material, which took ten years to hone, combines silicone and urethane properties and features a shimmery, high-gloss finish. The newest Fine Metallic series looks and feels luxe while retaining the brand’s penchant for rugged, utilitarian aesthetics.
Sleek and minimalist, the retro square-shaped GM-5600 and octagonal GM-2100 lines propelled the brand’s promise of toughness and strength, making G-SHOCK a reputable household name in the 1980s. Available in cool-toned silver and glowing gold colorways, the GM-5600YM-8, GM-5600YMG-9, GM-2100YM-8A and GM-2100YMG-9A deliver a shock- and water-resistant construction, equipped with a 1/100-second stopwatch and countdown timer. The GM-5600 models include five daily alarms and a Super Illuminator LED.
For G-SHOCK, the Tough Silicone Band marks another innovative milestone challenging the harmony between beauty and brawniness. It’s crafted from a multi-layer silicone resin protected by a urethane resin sheet — a translucent top layer with vapor deposition on the underside to create a luminous, metallic finish. Durable yet flexible, the silicone strap obtains the reflective materiality of stainless steel but is more abrasion-resistant and forgiving on the wrist when compared to ordinary silicon. At the watch face, a stainless steel bezel protects the glass fiber-reinforced case, both components meticulously cut and forged to seamlessly provide a sophisticated sense of texture that complements the shimmery strap.
Revamping the GM-5600 and GM-2100 lines with a new strap, case and bezel brings new life to these nostalgic designs, which have long remained synonymous with resilience. All the qualities of G-SHOCK’s heritage design remain unscathed — the challenge in the new millennium is harmonizing looks with substance.
