Super Bowl LIX is finally here, and a Christian singer will be performing “America the Beautiful” at the pregame show.
Lauren Daigle is set to perform alongside jazz musician Trombone Shorty at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The Louisiana native is a renowned contemporary Christian music singer and songwriter.
The 33-year-old gained prominence with her debut album, How Can It Be, released in 2015, which topped the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart and earned Platinum certification.
Her subsequent album, Look Up Child (2018), marked a significant milestone in her career. The lead single, “You Say,” achieved crossover success, reaching No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and setting a record by spending 129 weeks atop the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart. This accomplishment earned Daigle two Grammy Awards and solidified her status in both the Christian and mainstream music scenes.
Daigle has also been recognized with seven GMA Dove Awards, five Billboard Music Awards and two American Music Awards.
“This is such a special opportunity and I’m so grateful to Trombone Shorty (Troy) for inviting me to join him on such a massive stage,” Daigle told Newsweek via a spokesperson. “He has been such a friend to me in this industry and when he called me up to talk about the idea of me singing on ‘America the Beautiful’ with him, I was just so honored.
“It just goes to show the beauty of the music scene in New Orleans. What I love so much is that it’s so communal and people are looking out for each other. I feel like the Super Bowl is another moment for people to come together and have something to celebrate that unifies. It fills me up so much.”
During her appearance on the Arroyo Grande podcast on Wednesday, Daigle reflected on the opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl LIX pregame show, describing it as a moment of vindication following a past controversy with New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
The controversy began in 2020 when Daigle performed at a prayer service led by Sean Feucht. The rally, part of Feucht’s Let Us Worship tour, served as a protest against pandemic-related restrictions, which drew criticism from Cantrell.
Following Daigle’s performance, Cantrell sent a letter to the producers of Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve, urging them to bar the singer from participating and calling her a “weapon to society.” In response, Daigle stated that she was “disappointed that my spontaneous participation has become part of the political discourse, and I’m saddened by the divisive agendas of these times.”
Lockdowns, once widely embraced as a necessary public health measure during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, are now viewed more skeptically across the political spectrum. Five years ago, Democratic leaders defended stay-at-home orders, school closures and business shutdowns as essential to slowing the virus’s spread. Today, those same politicians avoid endorsing lockdowns, recognizing the deep economic, educational and social costs the can inflict.
On the podcast, Daigle reflected on the experience and her personal growth since then.
“To get this moment years later, I would say for anybody watching that has had their reputations smeared in any sort of way and they are just waiting for the moment of vindication, sometimes it only takes five years,” she said.
Daigle is also actively involved in philanthropic work. She collaborated with New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis and his wife, Tamela, to host the Super Bowl LIX Night of Freedom that took place on Tuesday. This event aimed to raise awareness and support for anti-human trafficking initiatives.
