Happy Saturday, Wordlers! If you are stuck on today’s word, Newsweek has your back with helpful hints.
The viral brainteaser exploded in popularity after it was first introduced to the public in October 2021. Three months later, in January 2022, The New York Times purchased Wordle for an undisclosed seven-figure price.
The game is a play on creator Josh Wardle‘s name and had just 90 users when it launched. Today, it boasts millions of players worldwide including celebrities such as Bradley Cooper, Meghan Markle, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and more.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in April 2023, Affleck said he wanted to join Damon’s Wordle league with Cooper and Bateman. “I’m trying to get into it, and I’m being velvet-roped by the bouncer here,” Affleck said, referring to the Good Will Hunting star.
Damon said the league also plays games Octordle and Quordle, noting it gets “competitive” and that Affleck is “welcome to join.”
Wordle tests users’ vocabulary, and the rules are rather simple, with the ultimate goal being to guess the daily five-letter word within six tries. Green squares indicate the letter is correct and in the exact place; yellow squares denote the letter is in the word, though not in the right spot; and gray squares indicate the letter is not in the word at all.
Yet, with countless online games to intrigue users, what is it about Wordle that keeps people coming back?
Erhan Aslan, who teaches applied linguistics at the University of Reading in England, said: “In today’s digital age, like many other things, many simple games like Wordle can be played online.
“I think that Wordle gains its popularity not only from its simple rules but also from its virality on social-media platforms as a result of people sharing/posting their scores to demonstrate a sense of accomplishment and validation.”
