SPOILER ALERT! This article contains spoilers for Season 4 of Sweet Magnolias.
Love, loss, and the passage of time—these themes have always been at the heart of Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias, which just concluded its fourth season.
The beloved drama follows lifelong friends Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley) as they navigate life in the close-knit town of Serenity, South Carolina. Adapted from Sherryl Woods’ cherished novels, the series offers the comforting warmth of a heartfelt story, much like being wrapped in a cozy blanket.
Season 4 kicked off with an unexpected time jump and wrapped up with new romances blooming and opportunities beckoning several characters to far-off places. While there’s still plenty of story left to explore, the season’s conclusion—free of nail-biting cliffhangers—raises the question of whether this could serve as the show’s final chapter.
Wondering if Sweet Magnolias is returning for another season? Here’s everything you need to know.
Will Sweet Magnolias Return for Season 5?
As of now, Netflix has not officially renewed Sweet Magnolias for a fifth season. However, that doesn’t mean the show’s journey is over just yet.
Speaking to Tudum after Season 4’s debut, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson shared that she “deeply, deeply hope[s] that we get a season 5,” expressing her desire to further explore key storylines—particularly how the characters adjust after Maddie’s job offer in New York City.
She explained, “…the reason we even raised the question here at the end of season 4 was because we feel so many women are confronted with, ‘Am I allowed to put myself first this one time?’ And how complicated it is for somebody like Maddie, with a new marriage, with kids still in the house, with dear, dear friends that you have seen every day your entire life. She’s so deeply woven into the community. Does that mean she has to say no to a dream?”
Heather Headley, who plays Helen, acknowledged that fans may see Season 4 as the show’s conclusion. “Everybody’s gonna think [that season 4 is the final season]… They’re gonna be like, ‘Well, is this it or not?’… and I think sometimes that’s the cliffhanger in itself. Is this it, or is there going to be another one?”
That said, Headley believes there’s plenty left to explore in a potential Season 5. “I think people are gonna wonder what the future holds… like what the future holds for Maddie. What happens with Dana Sue and definitely what is gonna go on with Helen, her love life and everything like that.”
One moment she hopes to see come to life is Helen’s wedding, which she insists “better be the wedding of all weddings for Serenity.”
Since Season 4 ended with Helen and Erik (Dion Johnstone) announcing their engagement, fans have been eagerly anticipating their big day. Headley, knowing how invested viewers are in the couple, acknowledged, “It’s been years in the making. And so I think it would be a beautiful celebration… and because it’s Helen, and she’s the one who likes the clothes and all that kind of stuff, it should be quite the wedding.”
Still, she’s prepared for whatever happens next, noting that if the series were to end with Season 4, “it could be” a fitting conclusion.
When Could Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Premiere?
If Netflix renews Sweet Magnolias for another season, fans likely won’t see new episodes until 2026.
For comparison, Season 4 was announced in October 2023, filmed between February and May 2024, and premiered in February 2025.
