A Georgia woman has shared hilarious footage of her boyfriend’s “territorial” dog seemingly sending a message about her boyfriend.
There’s no denying the fact that dogs can get pretty attached to their owners and even miss them when they are gone. A 2020 study published in the online journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science, which involved over 2,700 different dogs and more than 100 breeds, concluded that dogs experience anticipatory behaviors such as anxiety or clinginess when their owners leave.
But when they return, dogs often display emotional indicators of relief and excitement, suggesting they missed their human companions.
Coda, an 8-year-old dog who lives in Atlanta with Jennifer Nguyen’s boyfriend Ryan, is very much attached to his human friend and for understandable reasons.
Nguyen told Newsweek Coda was the “runt of the litter” whose life was changed the day Ryan asked a friend, whose dog had given birth to Coda and his siblings, if he could take the tiny pup home with him.
Ryan and Coda have been living “in simpatico” ever since. “Coda is like Ryan’s shadow. She’ll get up anytime he gets up and just follow him around and sit right next to him at all times,” Nguyen said.
“My boyfriend is pretty introverted. Besides work and band practice on Wednesday, all his time goes to Coda and wants to be with Coda,” she said.
She described the pet as the “perfect lazy Sunday dog,” and Coda’s life with Ryan sounds blissful, to say the least. “She loves to chill, lay around, be one with the pillows and eat,” Nguyen said. “We do kind of spoil her with extravagant meals, but she always turns her head around if she hears a bag open and thinks it’s chips or hears the fridge open.”
It would perhaps be understandable for Coda to be a little wary when Nguyen arrives. That certainly seemed the case in the video Nguyen shared to TikTok, under the handle yennyfam, showing the “territorial” pup with her paw on Ryan’s leg, shooting a dirty look in Nguyen’s direction.
Nguyen, however, insists that while it makes for a funny video, the clip is not representative of their relationship.
“I just caught her in a funny moment. She’s actually the most loving pup around,” Nguyen said. “I looked up and saw her paw on his lap and thought to video it because it was so cute, and I think she was looking and following the phone.” In fact, she claims it was pretty much love at first sight from the moment they met.
“She just ran right up to me and sat on my lap,” Nguyen said. “Which is funny because any friend, even though she’s met them before, she barks at when they enter the door. Even my roommate, who she has been around forever, she barks at.”
Despite becoming “instant friends,” there is a small tinge of jealousy on Nguyen’s part when it comes to Ryan’s relationship with Coda. “Ryan’s equally obsessed with Coda. He’s always kissing and snuggling her, and I’m like, ‘Hey! Where’s mine?’”
That’s ultimately overridden by the love she has for both her partner and his pet pooch, dirty looks and all.
“I adore them to death,” Nguyen said. “Coda is our little baby hog, and we’ve always known she’s a star.”
