The New York Mets are re-signing Pete Alonso to a two-year contract that calls for him to make $30 million in 2025 and includes an opt-out after the first year. He’ll make $54 million over the two years if he does not exercise the opt-out clause.
Andy Martino of SNY was the first to report that Alonso was headed back to Queens. Jeff Passan of ESPN was first to report the $30 million salary in Year 1 of the deal. Jon Heyman of the New York Post was first to report the $54 million total outlay.

According to Heyman, Alonso had the choice of a three-year deal or a two-year deal, and opted for the two-year deal.
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, Alonso gets a $10 million signing bonus and a $20 million salary in 2025.

The first baseman had lingered in free agency longer than expected, and seemed destined to lead him away from New York after he rejected the Mets’ offer of a three-year contract in the $68-70 million range.
Martino reported in January that the Mets pivoted to their “Plan B” and expected Alonso to sign elsewhere in 2025. A divorce seemed even more likely when Mets owner Steve Cohen sharply criticized the negotiations with Alonso’s agent in a public event Jan. 25.
“I don’t like the negotiations,” Cohen told fans at the team’s “Amazin’ Day” event. “I don’t like what’s being presented to us. Maybe that changes. Certainly I’ll always stay flexible. If it stays this way, I think we’re going to have to get used to the fact that we’re going to have to go forward with the existing players.”

In the end, Alonso and the Mets found their way back together.
Alonso hit 34 home runs in 2024, and has hit 226 since his 2019 Rookie of the Year campaign. He owns a career slash line of .249/.339/514. In six major league seasons, Alonso has played at least 152 games in every nonpandemic year.
The Tampa native had drawn interest from the Toronto Blue Jays, among other teams.
Reports that the Blue Jays were interested in signing Alonso accelerated, but one Twitter/X user suggested that the Jays “fumbled on the 10-yard line,” an analogy Martino deemed correct.
