Scream 7 has already undergone a gauntlet of problems even before production started. It survived Hollywood strikes, cast changes, director substitutions, controversial cast remarks, a “creative retooling, and scheduling issues.
But now, the long-awaited seventh edition of the slasher film franchise has started production and is set for release by Paramount in theaters on February 27, 2026.
The slasher film franchise has been a solid performer to date, totaling an aggregate of more than $900 million dollars at the worldwide box office, per Box Office Mojo. It has also spawned a television series, games and merchandise.
The first four films followed Neve Campbell’s character, Sidney Prescott, and her struggle against a succession of murderers who adopt the guise of Ghostface, a masked killer motivated by revenge, jealousy, and notoriety.
The fifth and sixth films in the series followed Samantha Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) and her sister, Tara (Jenna Ortega), who are targeted for their connection to the original killers.
Campbell is confirmed to return in Scream 7 after being absent in the sixth film. Also returning is original Ghostface Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) and returning supporting stars Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown. Newcomers Celeste O’Connor, McKenna Grace, and Asa Germann are also on board, and original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson is directing.
Guy Busick, who also wrote Scream 5 and Scream VI, will write the script for Scream 7, while Roger L. Jackson will return as the Ghostface voice.
Also in the mix are Joel McHale as Sidney’s husband, Mark Evans, and Mark Consuelos, Scott Foley and Ehtan Embry in undisclosed roles.
Little is known to date about the Scream 7 plot. The franchise shifted to New York City for the sixth film, and it was stated that Campbell’s character had gone into hiding during Scream VI (her absence was actually because of a pay dispute with the studio).
But all is now settled, and it’s up in the air as to where Campbell’s Sidney Prescott will be situated on the globe. Whether the story returns to the original Woodsboro, California setting is a key consideration.
There are still some loose threads, however: The Stu Macher/Ghostface character died in the first film, with speculation on his reappearance in Scream 7 centering on a flashback or hallucination. Whether popular character Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) from Scream 4 and Scream VI returns is also floating.
