Baumbach has an exclusive deal with the studio and previously directed The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) — which also starred Sandler. That movie world premiered at Cannes. Baumbach’s Marriage Story was nominated for six Oscars, winning Best Supporting Actress for Dern. He also directed the $100M+ sci-fi feature White Noise starring Gerwig and Adam Driver, which was based on the Don DeLillo novel. It’s the first time that Baumbach directed from a story not based on his own. It won’t be a surprise if Jay Kelly winds up at the fall film festivals: Marriage Story world premiered at Telluride in 2019 while White Noise debuted at the Venice Film Festival in 2022.
Baumbach is a 4x Oscar nominee for 2023’s Barbie (Adapted Screenplay), Marriage Story (Original Screenplay and Best Picture), and 2006’s The Squid and the Whale (Original Screenplay).
