The View panel isn’t exactly crossing its fingers that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be confirmed as President Donald Trump‘s health and human services secretary, but their guest this morning was perhaps even more adamant that RFK Jr. can’t be in charge of the country’s wellbeing.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a frequent guest on The View, joined the Hot Topics table virtually this morning from Washington, D.C., where she and other senators began questioning Kennedy yesterday (Jan. 29) as part of the confirmation process. The Massachusetts politician warned the Senate yesterday that Kennedy would “have the power to undercut vaccines and vaccine manufacturing across our country” if he were successfully confirmed as HHS secretary.
She added, “Kennedy can kill off access to vaccines and make millions of dollars while he does it. Kids might die, but Robert Kennedy can keep cashing in.”
After airing a clip of Warren’s Wednesday remarks to the Senate on The View today, Joy Behar joked, “Well, that’s one vote he’s not getting!”
When asked to explain more about yesterday’s hearing, Warren told The View that Kennedy has made “a lot of money promoting these anti-vax ideas” because he writes books, sells onesies and takes trips in connection to his views, but also makes money from lawsuits against vaccine companies. When someone sues a vaccine company and hypothetically wins $10 million, Warren explained, Kennedy would pocket “a cool $1 million.”
“If he gets to be the head of HHS, he will have the tools in his toolbox to make it more likely that those lawsuits win … and that the payoffs are even bigger,” Warren said, cautioning that Kennedy would have “no oversight” to potentially “undercut vaccines so that he can make more money in the future and the rest of us could end up literally with no vaccines at all to give to our children.”
Warren also accused Kennedy of being power-hungry and saying whatever he wanted to lock down the job, which she said was an offense to not just the senators at the hearing, but the American people, too. She described Kennedy as thinking, “I can say anything I want, anything I need to say to get confirmed. Just give me the power, and then I’m gonna do what suits me,’” adding, “And that was really scary.”
The View and Warren aren’t the only ones to sound the alarm bell about Kennedy. On last night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, host Jimmy Kimmel used a humorous approach to take down the health and human services nominee, joking that Kennedy was fired from a Jamba Juice for making “Stewart Little smoothies” after his cousin Caroline Kennedy claimed he used to brag about putting chicks in a blender to feed his hawk.
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
