Singer and songwriter Ryan Whyte Maloney, an alum and finalist on The Voice, has died. He was 44.
The Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner in Las Vegas confirmed Maloney died by suicide, per People. The cause of death is listed as a gunshot wound to the head.
Maloney competed on Season 6 of NBC’s hit singing competition in 2014.
The progressive rock singer chose to be on Blake Shelton‘s team after his blind audition of Journey’s “Lights” made all four judges — Shelton, Adam Levine, Usher and Shakira — turn their seats for the chance to recruit him.
He made it all the way to the Top 5 with performances of hit classics like Tina Turner‘s “What’s Love Got To Do With It” and Rascal Flats’ “Easy” before he was ultimately eliminated during the playoffs. Maloney later returned for the season finale to perform alongside the other contestants.
Maloney continued pursuing his music career after The Voice by releasing several singles and becoming a mainstay in the local Las Vegas music scene, where he had an ongoing residency performing at Shelton’s music venue Ole Red. Maloney also performed alongside Shelton at the grand opening.
It appears Maloney continued performing as recently as last week. Multiple fans commented on his recent social media post to lament his passing, with many noting they watched him perform at the Ole Red as recently as Friday (Jan. 24).
People also reports the singer also shared a video of himself at what appeared to be a bar the evening before his death. “Nine fine Irishmen for a private party tonight, and we will be rocking,” he said in the clip.
Maloney has performed with the likes of Morgan Wallen, One Republic, Ed Sheeran, Hunter Hayes, Coldplay and more.
