What is next for the Pittsburgh Steelers following yet another first-round playoff exit?
Things were looking up with their new quarterback situation that saw Justin Fields kick off the season before veteran Russell Wilson took over in Week 7 after recovering from injury.
Despite starting off 10-3, the Steelers dropped their last four games of the regular season as the offense struggled to find consistency.
“My inbox has been pretty full,” Steelers team president Art Rooney II said via The Athletic. “And look, I share their frustrations.”

While head coach Mike Tomlin has never had a losing season throughout his tenure with the Steelers which began in 2007, they haven’t won a playoff game in eight seasons and it’s beyond the point of impatience.
“I think the biggest piece of the puzzle, we’ve got to address this quarterback position,” Rooney said. “I think when you look around and see teams that are at that next level, that’s why they are. They’re there for that reason. So we’ve got work to do.”
Rooney expressed that he has faith in both quarterbacks, but plans on keeping one instead of both while looking for an insurance plan through the draft.
“I think they’re both capable quarterbacks, and my preference would be to sign one of them,” Rooney said. “That’ll be a priority, and I think that will give us the best opportunity to move forward. Obviously, we’ll be looking in the draft as well. We’ve got a whole quarterback room to fill, and so there’s jobs open in there. I wouldn’t be surprised if we look at the draft, as well, either this year or next.”
Wilson finished the season with a 63.7% completion rate and 225.6 yards per game with 16 total touchdowns in 11 games played. Fields played in 10 games with a 65.8% rate, 110.6 yards per game, and five scores.
The Steelers revamped their quarterback room by signing Wilson, acquiring Fields, and trading away Kenny Pickett last offseason. With Wilson on a one-year deal and Fields in the final year of his rookie contract, both are now set to become free agents.
“It sort of takes two to tango, and so we’ll see where it goes,” Rooney said. “I think my preference would probably be to have something more than a one-year (deal) in place next time around. We’ll see where it takes us.”
