When she decided to change her hairstyle, Morgan Coyle wondered how the people around her would react.
Coyle, from Chicago, had six inches cut off from her long blonde hair, dyeing it back to her natural brown color—a look she hadn’t sported in years. Nervous, yet excited, the 25-year-old filmed the reaction of the two most important men in her life, her dad and her boyfriend.
In a video on TikTok, the adorable reactions captured hearts, with one viewer dubbing it “green flags!!!”
First, Coyle stopped by her dad’s workplace to reveal the new look. His reaction was a blend of shock and proud dad vibes as he embraced his daughter and praised her bold new style. Later, she visited her boyfriend, who had only ever known her with long blonde hair. His reaction? Pure delight and heartfelt admiration that left viewers gushing.
“I went for a pretty big change,” Coyle told Newsweek. “My boyfriend had never seen me with short hair or anything other than blonde, so his reaction was priceless. I was super nervous, but I knew he’d be shocked and supportive. His response made me feel so beautiful and confident in my decision.”
The reactions to Morgan’s bold hair transformation are particularly striking when compared to the often-cited stereotype that “men don’t notice appearance changes” like haircuts or new outfits.
But missing a new haircut isn’t uncommon—one 1998 study on so called change blindness by Simons and Levin demonstrated just how often people fail to notice dramatic changes in their environment. In the experiment, researchers staged a conversation between a participant and an experimenter on the street.
Mid-conversation, two other researchers carried a door between them, temporarily obstructing the participant’s view. During the interruption, the original experimenter swapped places with one of the door carriers. Astonishingly, over half of the participants didn’t notice the swap, continuing the conversation as if nothing had happened.
Coyle’s followers on TikTok couldn’t get enough of the reactions from the men in her life.
One TikTok user, Payton Craig, commented: “This is quite literally the cutest thing.” While viewer Maya M Shuler said: “Wait I cried he’s so kind and your dad is so sweet and funny.”
Delighted by the response to the video, Coyle explained that she wanted to share the healthy and supportive relationships with others online.
“My followers always seem to enjoy little glimpses into my relationship,” she said. “He’s my biggest cheerleader, and I want to show people they deserve kindness and support in a partner.”
