San Diego Padres infielder Ha-Seong Kim is one of the most intriguing free agents of the offseason. Kim is a very talented player with an incredible glove, but he’s coming off a serious shoulder surgery.
It’s unclear when he will be available to play, so his market in free agency has been hard to predict.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently named the San Francisco Giants as one of the more likely landing spots for Kim. The versatile infielder is projected to sign for $49 million this winter, per Spotrac.
“The expectation remains that Ha-Seong Kim won’t be game-ready for Opening Day as he recovers from shoulder surgery but that he will be back on the field well in advance of the All-Star break,” Miller wrote. “Naturally, this has made his market a complicated one, as the team that ends up signing him pretty well has to plan on using a backup option at either second base or shortstop for the first month of the season.
“The Giants have also been a popular rumored landing spot for Kim. They could roll with Tyler Fitzgerald at second base until Kim is good to go, and more fully resolve their 2B/DH plans whenever that is.”
The Giants have already added shortstop Willy Adames this winter. Bringing in Kim on a team-friendly deal wouldn’t be a bad way of building a middle infield through free agency.
Depending on what his contract will end up costing, this deal could make a lot of sense for San Francisco. To make it even sweeter, the Giants would be poaching him from a loaded division rival.
