Channel 4 has made a documentary following the emotional journey of Palestinian filmmaker and journalist Yousef Hammash, who was displaced six months after his Gaza reporting sparked global outrage.
In This is Gaza, Hammash, who is part of the Channel 4 News team that has won Emmys and BAFTAs for its Israel-Hamas War reporting, steps out in front of the camera for the first time to tell his story.
Hammash spent years reporting from the Gaza Strip. His early reporting in the wake of the devastating October 7 Hamas attack sparked outrage but made him and his family a target, and he was displaced after six months. In the doc, watching back his footage, he charts his family’s displacement and the heartbreaking decision to leave his home as he travels south to Rafah. It takes on the before, during and after of the seismic chain of events sparked by October 7.
Hammash traveled to Edinburgh last year to speak at the TV Festival about how he was shunned by his community simply for doing his job and being a journalist.
