A mischievous one-year-old cat living in New York City has gained viral attention after pulling off a bold heist: snatching an entire raw chicken breast from the kitchen counter and devouring it.
Spicy’s owner Danielle Burman shared the story on Instagram, where the video has gained more than 1.4 million views.
“I have never seen Spicy open the plastic of any food and then steal it,” Burman told Newsweek. “He tries to steal pizza and eat pasta if it’s already out, but this was the first time I left the room and he opened it and ran away with a whole chicken breast.”
But in the video, the crime was clear as Spicy waltzed around the kitchen, seemingly unapologetic about the missing chicken breast.
“I found him under the table with it almost completely gone. He dragged it from the kitchen counter to under the kitchen table in the living room,” Burman said. “I found him hunched over and initially thought he threw up, so I went to the kitchen to get paper towels only to discover that he had opened the package and what he was doing was eating an entire raw chicken breast.”
Spicy’s antics had his owner worried at first, particularly as experts warn against feeding cats raw chicken due to risks of bacterial contamination, parasites, and nutritional imbalance. Veterinarians recommend cooked chicken as part of a balanced diet, and those considering raw diets should consult a vet first.
“I was initially very scared because I thought I needed to take him to the vet immediately to get his stomach pumped,” Burman said. “Online it said to monitor him for a day. He didn’t have any symptoms or issues and never threw up. He is as good as ever… just an absolute scavenger. Lesson learned.”
Spicy’s brilliant theft charmed viewers online. One user, Swarm_of_unknown, wrote: “Spicy reminds me of my childhood cat. He once stole a whole slice off a spiral ham.” Another, beefwithsteve, joked: “Spicy just doing what he wants,” while missgabbymoralesxx said: “Spicy has no regrets!”
This isn’t the first time a cat has gained viral attention for swiping a human meal. Last year another mog left people in stitches after he arrived home with the neighbor’s chicken in tow.
