U.S. President Donald Trump said U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is doing a “very good job” and they have a “very good relationship.”
Trump told reporters on board Air Force One late Saturday that the two leaders would be having a call “over the next 24 hours,” according to media reports.
“He’s liberal, which is a bit different from me, but I think he’s a very good person and I think he’s done a very good job thus far,” said Trump. “He’s represented his country in terms of philosophy. I may not agree with his philosophy, but I have a very good relationship with him.”
Starmer told POLITICO in mid-January that he wants to get around the negotiating table with Trump’s team in the coming weeks and strike a trade deal. The Labour leader has promised to “take our partnership to the next level.”
Trump’s positive remarks on Starmer over the weekend stand in contrast to those of billionaire tech mogul and Trump ally Elon Musk — who has called for the British prime minister to be jailed.
“Prison for Starmer,” Musk posted on his X platform earlier this month, sharing a post from an anonymous account claiming that Starmer prioritized tackling anti-Muslim abuse over condemning a child-killer.
Musk followed that up with a poll asking whether America “should liberate the people of Britain from their tyrannical government.”
