An animal-control department in Michigan celebrated the good news that their longest-dog resident finally got his happy ending with a family who had been grieving for their previous canine.
A representative from Arenac County Animal Control told Newsweek via Facebook that Carl the pit bull first arrived at the shelter in November 2023. He was dumped there and trapped by an officer before being brought into the kennels. There, he sat waiting day in and day out for his forever family for over a year.
Carl, luckily, got a break from shelter life when he got to live with a foster family for about a month. Fostering animals for any length of time helps provide extra space for the shelter to bring in other pets and gives that animal a place to unwind, heal and grow.
However, on January 20, Carl’s forever family stepped forward and adopted him. The post by Arenac County Animal Control shared the pit bull’s good news; photos show the dog smiling ear to ear as he posed with his new family.
His new family sent the animal shelter a photo of Carl making himself at home. He spread out across the couch with pillows and blankets surrounding him. Realizing this was home, he could finally get a good nap in.
Part of the caption reads: “We all had happy tears when he left the shelter, but to now have his very own home, that means so much more.”
The family who adopted Carl lost their previous pit bull, Clyde, in September.
Grieving for a pet can be one of the hardest things a person goes through in life, but, sometimes, bringing home a new animal can help with the healing process, an article from the American Kennel Club stated. There is no set time when it is best to bring home a new animal as each person will have different grieving timelines.
This family decided they were ready for a new dog to make fresh memories with, which is when they came across Carl. It immediately became a perfect fit. The shelter shared in the post that Carl will hopefully help “mend their hearts with some more Pittie kisses!”
