Welcome to Best of Late Night, a rundown of the previous night’s highlights that lets you sleep — and lets us get paid to watch comedy. Here are the 50 best movies on Netflix right now.
Church and State
During the inaugural prayer service at Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde asked President Trump to have mercy on L.G.B.T.Q. children, undocumented immigrants and others who might be frightened about his return to power.
On Wednesday’s “Daily Show,” Ronny Chieng noted how aggravated Trump seemed to be as he watched from the front row.
“He was probably looking up at Jesus on the cross and thinking, ‘Hey, you and me both, brother!’” Chieng said.
“New executive order: We are banning church.” — RONNY CHIENG, pretending to sign a proclamation
“Bishop, please, all right? We don’t go to church to hear a lecture about having mercy on the less fortunate. That’s not what church is for.” — RONNY CHIENG
“Trump was like, ‘I only came here because I heard there were free crackers and now I’m getting roasted by Tig Notaro?’” — RONNY CHIENG
“To be fair, I mean, can you imagine going to church and the pastor is only addressing you? Like, ‘This next sermon is about the sinners, the cheaters, the degenerate gamblers, Gary!’” — RONNY CHIENG
“The point is, no one has ever had a worse time in church than Trump did, and yes, I’ve seen ‘Spotlight.’” — RONNY CHIENG
“Not only was it beautiful, it took courage to stand up there and say something simple, something so kind, something so true to the example of Christ — and even better, it made Trump super uncomfortable. Because here’s the thing, sermons aren’t a debate. Trump just had to sit there and listen to it.” — STEPHEN COLBERT
“When asked yesterday about his thoughts on the National Prayer Service, President Trump told a reporter it was ‘not too exciting’ — but still more exciting than his criminal trial.” — SETH MEYERS
“Yeah, dog — it’s church. The most exciting thing that happens is sometimes they ring a little bell. Not all the time, just sometimes. No one knows why.” — STEPHEN COLBERT
The Punchiest Punchlines (Pardon Me Edition)
“But after getting yelled at by this church Karen, Trump was also getting yelled at by everyone just because he released hundreds of violent insurrectionists back into the streets or something. And yeah, OK, they beat some cops and broke some windows, but they were doing it for him!” — RONNY CHIENG
“When asked yesterday by a reporter if he is sending a message that assaulting police officers is OK by pardoning convicted Capitol attack prisoners, President Trump said, ‘No, the opposite.’ And when the reporter said, ‘But aren’t you encouraging lawlessness?’ Trump said, ‘I know you are, but what am I?’” — SETH MEYERS
“I read that President Trump’s last-minute decision to pardon nearly every Jan. 6 rioter took a lot of his allies by surprise. They were like, ‘This isn’t the thoughtful, measured Trump we remember from the first term.’” — JIMMY FALLON
“According to one adviser, Trump just said, ‘Eff it, release them all.’ Yeah, at this point, the only prisoner Trump hasn’t released is Melania.” — JIMMY FALLON
The Bits Worth Watching
Questlove told Jimmy Fallon about watching more than 900 episodes of “Saturday Night Live” for his new documentary, “Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of ‘S.N.L.’ Music.’”
What We’re Excited About on Thursday Night
The folk rock musician Hurray for the Riff Raff will perform on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
