SUNRISE and studio khara’s Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX anime film officially premiered in Japan last week. Following a successful opening weekend and topping the first spot at the Japanese box office, GKIDS announced that it had acquired the North American theatrical distribution rights for the anime film. Yesterday, the company dropped an English-subtitled version of the film’s official trailer, confirming its US theatrical release as February 28.
Directed by industry veteran Kazuya Tsurumaki, the animation for the film is led by Hideaki Anno‘s legendary team at studio khara, best known for projects such as the final Evangelion films.
The story of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX revolves around a high-schooler named Amate Yuzuriha, who leads a peaceful life in a space colony. Until one day, Amate’s life becomes entwined in the world of Clan Battle – an illegal mobile suit dueling sport – following a fateful encounter with a war refugee named Nyaan.
The film, officially titled Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, is an alternate retelling of the core events in the Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX TV Anime, which has yet to receive an official release date.
