A short, repeating video from Nintendo’s official Switch 2 website includes one small detail not included in the reveal: how to remove those fancy new Joy-Cons from the screen.
It turns out that chunky button on the back of the Joy-Cons, positioned just beneath the ZR/ZL triggers, is what you’ll push to detach the controllers. While we obviously haven’t gotten our hands on the console yet, this seems much more ergonomic than the tiny buttons that perform the same function on the original Switch.
It’s still unclear how exactly these buttons disengage the Joy-Cons. The Joy-Cons are rumored to attach to the Switch 2 via powerful magnets, and Polygon sister site The Verge noticed that one cylindrical piece on the interior of the Joy-Con pushes outward in the animation from the reveal trailer. The Verge speculated that it’s possible that button simply pushes out when you hit the “detach” trigger in order to distance the Joy-Con from the console and weaken the magnets’ pull, allowing you to pull the Joy-Cons off. Much like the Joy-Con pin connectors within the Switch 2’s side indentations, this could be a worrying failure point in the console’s design depending on the materials used.
If it wasn’t obvious, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the Switch 2. We expect to get a few more details answers during the next Nintendo Direct on April 2, so stay tuned.
