A map of Arkansas shows the counties affected by flood warnings issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) on Friday.

Why It Matters

Flooding can be a hazard to people driving in affected areas, with the NWS warning that most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles.

What To Know

The map below shows the following Arkansas counties that the NWS said are impacted by the flooding of White River: Jackson, White, Woodruff, Prairie, Monroe and Arkansas.

The NWS said in one alert Friday morning that the flooding of White River was minor. The flood warnings are in effect until early Monday morning.

What Arkansas Cities and Towns Are Impacted?

Impacted cities included Newport, Augusta, Georgetown, Des Arc and Clarendon.

What Is A Flood Warning?

The NWS issues a flood warning when flooding is imminent or occurring.

“River flooding can be caused by heavy rainfall, dam failures, rapid snowmelt and ice jams,” the NWS said on its website.

Ice jams are when ice moving downstream gets caught and water builds up behind it. Ice jams are common in the winter and they can cause upstream flooding and when the jam breaks, it can cause flash flooding downstream.

The weather service explained on its website that minor river flooding “means that low-lying areas adjacent to the stream or river, mainly rural areas and farmland and secondary roadways near the river flood.”
