A man was left with serious life-threatening injuries Thursday night after his car plunged off a Washington, DC, bridge into the icy waters below during a snowstorm.

The driver was involved in a crash with another vehicle on the Arlington Memorial Bridge when his car flew over the side railing of the bridge into the Potomac River just before 7 p.m., according to DC Fire and EMS.

The car quickly sank and was fully submerged by the time emergency responders got to the scene.

Divers pulled the man out of the sunken vehicle in a little more than 20 minutes, fire officials said during a press conference at the scene.

He was brought to the shore and given “advanced life support” before he was rushed to the hospital, according to authorities.

Divers did three sweeps of the submerged vehicle and did not find any other people inside. Recovery efforts to pull the car out of the water will be postponed until daylight Friday morning.

Two people who were inside the other vehicle involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and one was taken to the hospital. That car remained on the bridge, fire officials said.

The Arlington Memorial Bridge, which connects the National Mall in DC to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia and is a major commuter crossing, remains closed Thursday night.

More information about those wounded in the crash was not provided by officials.
